High performance cam shaft for the 2005 to 2009 Chevy Cobalt 2.0L, 2.2L and 2.4L.

The cam shaft is an integral part of the engine and if you're looking to increase the power and sound of your ride. then changing to an after market high performance cam is a must.

The cam shaft is a long steel shaped cylinder that is located at the top of the cylinder head.  The cam shaft uses lobes that push against the valves to open and close the intake and exhaust valve in time with the pistons.   An egg shape is the closest I can thing that resembles the shape of a lobe, kind of oblong.  High performance cams shaft will have bigger profile lobes.

The valve springs are connected to the valve stems and held in place by valve stem retainer springs.  The valve springs are made of very strong spring steel because they are pushed down with great force and very quickly at higher speeds.

One end of the rocker connects to the top of the valve stem and the other end rest under the lobes of the cam shaft.  For the complete picture, the key is turned sending current to the starter; the starter engages the fly wheel which turns the crank.  The crank is connected to the pistons and there is a timing belt or timing chain that connects the crank to the cam shaft.   Timing belts and timing chains need be adjusted or replaced regular intervals.

If you have average mechanical ability you can adjust and even change a timing belt or timing chain in your garage.   As the pistons move down in the intake stroke the intake valve opens, the intake valve closes when the piston reaches bottom.  The exhaust valve opens when the piston reaches the bottom and closes when the piston completes the exhaust stroke.

Single overhead cam shaft denotes an engine with one cam shaft per cylinder head.  Inline 4 cylinder and inline 6 cylinder engines with a single cylinder head are referred to as single overhead cam shaft (SOHC) engines and the moniker also applies V6 and V8 engines that with one cam shaft per head.

Double overhead cam (DOHC) engines have two cams shaft per cylinder head.  So inline engines would have two cams shaft and V engines would have 4 cams shaft.  DOHC allow for more intake and exhaust valves which means that gases produced will flow more freely because there are more openings.  DOHC equipped cars typically produce more power than the SOHC equipped cars.

Changing to an after market cam shaft is a must.
