The Cobalt's GM Delta platform or frame is also shared with two other GM products. The Chevrolet Cobalt can be purchased as a 2 door coupe or a 4 door sedan or as a high performance, super sport version. Struts support the independent front suspension, a semi-independent torsion bar is mounted in the rear and front disc and rear drum brakes provide the stopping power. Anti-lock brakes are optional on the LS base model, but included as standard equipment on all other models. Chevrolet offers three power producing fuel efficient engine sizes to choose from. The Chevrolet Cobalt sports 3 wheel sizes, 15 and 16 inch and the whopping 18 inch on the Chevrolet Cobalt SS.
The Chevrolet Cobalt has a wheelbase of 103.3 inches and a width of 68.4. In the 2 door coupe version the Chevrolet Cobalt weighs in at 2681 lbs and 2747 lbs for the 4 door sedan.
The Chevrolet Cobalt has several levels of comfort, styling and performance options available. The LS version is considered the base model with the LT coming in as the mid-level model, the LTZ represents the high end model and the SS or Super Sport represents the high performance based super charged model for Chevrolet.
In 2005 Chevy introduced the Cobalt 2.2L sedan and coupe and the Cobalt 2.0L high performance coupe and sedan super charged Chevrolet Cobalt SS version. In 2006 Chevrolet introduced a non super charged Cobalt SS 2.4L inline 4 to the line up. In 2007 Chevy increased horse power for the 2.2L and the 2.4L power plants with the 2.2L inline 4 increased to 148hp and the 2.4L increased to 173hp. 2007 also saw a new center console, steering wheel and radio unit being introduced. In 2008 the Chevrolet Cobalt 2.4L SS Coupe and SS Sedan were renamed simply as Sport Coupe and Sport Sedan. Replacement of the super charged engine with a 260hp turbocharged engine also occurred. Mid year saw the manual transmission equipped LS and LT1 models increase their fuel economy to 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway and designated as XFE (X-tra Fuel Economy). For safety side impact air bags and StabiliTrak stability control system were introduced and became standard equipment on all Cobalt's. In 2009, for better fuel economy and more power Chevrolet added a 2.2L LAP engine replaced the 2.4L in the Cobalt Sport Coup and Sport Sedan models, and the 2.2L L61 engine. Chevrolet introduced bluetooth capabilities, as well as the option for a reconfigurable performance display.
