Automotive Cold Air Induction systems perform a vital role in the performance of your Chevy Cobalt. Air induction systems increase the amount of cooler air available for fuel combustion. A basic air induction system replaces the restrictive factory filter and air induction housing that is located in your engine compartment. These stock systems lack styling and have performance issues.
Air induction systems first appeared in the 1980's and were made of molded plastic. In the 1990s several more manufactures entered the market with their versions of cold air induction.
Many companies now offer cold induction systems with mandrel bent metal (lightweight steel) or aluminum tube designs which allow the tubes to be bent without kinking, thus increasing and improving the air flow to the combustion chamber. Advantages of using aluminum are; aluminum tubing prevents rust from forming on both the inside and outside for the tube and aluminum is also considerable lighter than steel. The disadvantage of using metal for the inlet tube are; that there is a good possibility that rust will form both on the inside and outside of the tube even if painted with high quality high-temperature paint. Paint can also crack and peel, and once this happens rust can take hold and compromise the integrity of your induction system. Steel is also heavier than aluminum. No matter what the inlet system is made from the thermal conductivity of the material has little or no effect on engine power.
Basically the cold air induction system relocates the filter outside the engine compartment where it can deliver cooler air to the combustion chamber. Warm oxygen which is delivered by the stock air box creates a moderate explosion in the combustion chamber thereby regulating horsepower and torque. The introduction of cold denser air by the cold air intakes system provides a more intense explosion in the chamber which increases horsepower and torque. Now take that cold air free flowing mandrel bent inlet tube and tune it in length and diameter to match the engine. The result is more air moving to the cylinders which creates maximum power gains for your Chevy Cobalt.
The differences between a cold air system and a short ram system are; the cold air system is longer and puts the air filter outside the engine compartment to achieve cold air induction, the short ram system uses a shorter inlet tube and places the air filter under the hood. There is no power advantage to using either one.
Most chevy cobalt cold air intakessystems are C.A.R.B. approved. C.A.R.B. E.O. is the California Air Resources Board Executive Order that exempts them from the prohibitions of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) 27165 which states that you cannot modify your car in the area of emission control system. If there is a C.A.R.B.E.O. number it exempts the cold air intake system and allows you to legally install it on your automobile.
