Headers are very affordable and one of the easiest bolt-on performance accessories for your Chevy Cobalt. The performance headersinstallation process can be accomplished in a day if you have a little automotive knowledge and tools. Don't forget about a shop or garage, car ramps or lift, and hand and air tools. You may want to ask a friend to assist you with the headers installation process as two heads are better than one. There are many different companies selling performance headers, so you will need to do your own research when choosing the right headers for your cobalt.
Headers are necessary to achieve maximum performance levels.
For example, let's look at the 4 cylinder Chevy Cobalt and the header. Relieving back pressure should be your first concern of your decision process. Header installation will also increase your Cobalts performance. The performance header package consists of the performance header which is made up of a single header pipe for each cylinder that are mandrel bent tubing which allow smooth exhaust flow. Each header pipe is tuned and converge together into a larger pipe called the collector. Header pipes are either made of lightweight steel and they can be coated with a rust and heat resistant ceramic coating. The headers kit also includes instructions and all the necessary hardware for a smooth complete headers installation. Steel flanges for the header are machined and precision drilled for a perfect fit which eliminates leakage. Most performance header kits come with a manufacturer decal that can be placed on the window. Each header pipe in the package is trimmed and tuned to the same length which allows each cylinders exhaust gases to arrive in the collector equally spaced out to relieve back pressure. To gain horse power and performance you need to eliminate the back pressure in the manifold by installing a performance header.
In a stock engine, equipped with stock factory installed lacking in performance exhaust system there are no headers. The exhaust gases exit the cylinder and make their way through the exhaust manifold and then through a single pipe to the catalytic converter and then on to the muffler eventually eliminating out the tail pipe. This process can cause back pressure in the manifold which for performance is a killer. Picture this, the exhaust gases from one cylinder can build up pressure in the manifold that can affect the next cylinder and so on. To relieve this pressure install a performance header.
Now that you have decided to install a performance header, you will want to finish the job by installing a cold air intake system, a new 4" exhaust system and a performance chip. You may not be able to do this all at once, but each one of these items can be purchased and installed in stages, the good part is that you can do it yourself.
