Custom alloy wheels rims for the Chevy Cobalt.
So you want to upgrade your Cobalt's stock steel wheels and tires. There are many different types to choose from. So it's best to decide which wheel is best for your specific need.
Wheels can be manufactured from steel, aluminum, or alloy. Steel wheels can be non-descript, painted, adorned with a stylish plastic hubcap or finished in shiny chrome. Steel wheels are subject to elements and corrosion. Aluminum wheels can be brushed or polished and come in many different designs and are an alternative to steel wheels. Next up, alloy wheels which are made by combining different materials together and either casting or forging them into many different designs. Basically alloy is a mixture of two or more metals that are combined with a base metal. Cast alloy wheels are the most common available today and are readily available at good prices. Alloy wheels are stronger than steel wheels and they are much lighter and are better at conducting heat. The other big difference is the high expense associated with alloy wheels due to the manufacturing process. Alloy wheels perform two functions for the Cobalt owner, they are cosmetic and dress up your rides appearance, and they improve handling performance as a part of your car's suspension. Forged alloy wheels are stronger and lighter and more expensive than the cast alloy version. Typically forged alloy wheels are found on high end luxury/sport vehicles. To balance steel wheels weights are attached to the edge of the rim where the weights for alloy wheels are attached in the center and out of site. There are many manufactures producing hundreds of alloy wheel designs fir every driving requirement.
You can purchase cast alloy wheels for your Cobalt with different offsets. Offset can be either positive or negative and measured in millimeters. Positive offset means the hub surface is closer to the outside edge of the wheel where the wheel wraps around the brake hardware. Negative offset means the hub surface is closer to the inside edge of the wheel where the wheels sticks outwards. When selecting your alloy wheel be sure to take into account the wheel width, the wheel offset and the tire size. It is advisable to stay within the limits of your vehicle manufacturer, so please check with them if in doubt. If your Cobalt's rims are held in place by 4 lug nuts then your lug pattern is 4x100 if your cobalt has 5 lugs holding the rim in place then your pattern is 5x110.
